Hiram House

Hiram Independence Flat is a self-contained, modern two-bedroom flat with a kitchen, shower room and living room. It was set up so that students of all abilities could practise the living skills they will need in their everyday lives.

Hiram is a light and airy complex of individual rooms and suites. It’s designed to provide the individuality and privacy that any young person wants and needs.

Four communal areas are the heartbeat of the complex where learners are encouraged to share, socialise and interact with each other and staff. These are:

  • a large and open lounge for talking, playing games or watching TV together.
  • a large, farmhouse-style kitchen where the Hiram residents cook for themselves.
  • dining room where meals are shared and the day’s events are discussed.
  • a new upstairs common room that is part arts and hobbies room, part cinema and an internet café.

Attached to the complex, it’s close enough to be included in all the important opportunities for interaction, but independent enough to help residents move towards an even greater degree of independence.

Learners can spend up to 12 months sharing (with a carefully-matched peer) and continue to be supported by a specialist team. Hiram is chosen for selected students to help them make the transition to independent living in a safe environment where their progress can be monitored and help is always close at hand.

Each student has an individual programme based upon their needs, abilities and the nature of their next step placement.
