Two of our current students Rory and Sam have been involved with Mixed ability Rugby since it started up at Longlevens (Gloucester Griffins) over a year ago. This wonderful initiative was introduced to us by Imas.(International Mixed ability sport) Mixed Ability Rugby sees players with and without disabilities play rugby together. This enables previously excluded participants to become equal team members without being separated, classified or labelled. Wider social benefits as a result of the programme include increased social integration and diversity awareness, as well as changing perceptions within clubs and communities.
I have had the privilege of being a part of Rory and Sam's journey, going with them to training every week. I have seen their confidence soar, and watched them become valued members of the team, and a fantastic group of people.
This club, makes a real difference to the lives of the people who take part, whether they have a disability or not! It makes rugby accessible for all, builds confidence, and has such a team spirit! I cannot praise this club highly enough! They have played Two matches as Gloucester against Worcester Warriors, home and away, and hope to have more games soon. Our Mixed Ability team won Aviva UK’s #GrassrootsGiveaway competition. we were looking forward to our usual training session with some of the Gloucester Rugby coaches to be filmed by Aviva… but we got a huge surprise when Ben Morgan, Charlie Sharples and Billy Twelvetrees turned up as well! A huge thanks to everyone involved, it was a night the team will remember for a long time!
